Current Activities

We are supporting a project to make FreeBSD tolerate the removal of active disk devices, such as when a USB flash device with a mounted filesystems is physically detached by a user. Currently the system may panic in this situation. The work involves adding proper reference counting to strategic portions of the kernel and modifying filesystems to properly handle "device lost" errors.

We are supporting the virtualized network stack project. This will significantly enhance FreeBSD's jail functionality, allowing jails to have their own complete and locally administered network stacks, including firewalls, routing, and IPsec configurations.

We are continuing to support the latest Sun Updates for Java 1.6 for FreeBSD 7.0.

New projects have started that we will be announcing soon.

Working on our end-of-year fund raising activities.

We are working to upgrade the project's network testbed with 10Gigabit interconnects. Cisco has generously donated a 10Gigabit switch and we have received network adapters from Myricom, Neterion, Intel, and Chelsio. Adapters from other vendors are being solicited so that we can do interoperability testing.

Letter From The Board

Dear Visitor,

Welcome to the FreeBSD Foundation's website!

Since our founding in 2000, the FreeBSD Foundation has played a growing role in supporting the FreeBSD Project and community. Here you'll find information about all our recent activities. From managing intellectual property issues and funding development projects, to supporting technical conferences and developer collaboration, we've been very busy. I encourage you take a few minutes to browse our website and learn more about what we do.

As a 501(c)3 charity, all of our work is funded by donations. We believe strongly that the community we serve and those who trust us with their donations deserve insight into how we manage our finances. For this reason, our books are published quarterly and can be reviewed in the financial section of our website.

2007 was a tremendously successful year for the FreeBSD Foundation. Thanks to the overwhelming support of our donors, we shattered our fundraising goal, raising over $400,000! Your generosity has allowed us to grow our budget for 2008 with a small surplus devoted to ensuring the long term financial stability of the FreeBSD Foundation.

We hope to continue our growth in the years to come, but that will only be possible through continued public support. I hope you not only benefit from our work, but find it compelling enough to consider sending us a donation.

Enjoy the site!

Sincerely,

Justin T. Gibbs
