Barry

General

Barry is supposed to become a more or less usable package manager for the FreeBSD operating system. It's sole reason for being is that I want a nice KDE frontend with which I can check which ports are available and gather a few information about them.

Barry is also available in a few different languages: right now it contains translations in the following languages:

If you happen to feel like helping me a bit with this, don't hesitate to mail me for very straightforward instructions on how to translate Barry (or any other KDE app, for that matter) into another language!

Please note that Barry is currently only an read-only frontend; this means that it's not possible to do any changes to your installation such as adding packages, changing ports, or deinstalling software. This might be implemented lateron, but it's currently not very high on the TODO list. ;-)

The current version is 0.7.

Screenshots

Here are a few screenshots showing the a recent Barry version in action: Barry's default interface
Here you can see Barry's main view. At the left side is a list with categories, each containing a list of ports. General information about the currently selected port are displayed at the right side.

Barry showing the files belonging to a port
This shows Barry displaying the list of files belonging to a package (in this case xmms).

Barry showing a list of build dependencies
Here you can see how Barry shows the list of build dependencies for the xmradio port. The dependencies are shown in a recursive manner, that means you can instantly see the dependencies for each dependency as well. Note how in this case xmradio itself depends on the XFree86-libraries port as well as the open-motif port, which itself is a dependency of xmradio.

Barry's search dialog
This is the find dialog used for querying the underlying ports database. By default only the port names are searched through, but if requested Barry can also process the port comments and descriptions - which of course takes a little longer. You can also search by regular expressions which makes specifying very precise search queries very straightforward.
